Aplastic Anemia Causes And Epidemiology

Etiology
Peripheral pancytopenia secondary to hypoplasia of the bone marrow
The mechanism for this decrease in hematopoiesis remains poorly understood
May be congenital or acquired
In half of acquired cases no cause is found
Epidemiology
Approximately 1,000 new cases are diagnosed in the US each year
Equal incidence among males and females
While the disease does occur in children, it is most common in young adults (age 15 – 30) and elderly patients (age > 60)
Most common form in children is Fanconi anemia
