Etiology
AML is the malignant transformation and expansion of nonlymphoid precursors in the bone marrow
Acquired chromosomal abnormalities have been found in 80% of cases may be due to chromosome abnormalities (Down syndrome, trisomy 13), chromatin fragility (Fanconi’s anemia, Bloom syndrome, ataxia-telangiectasia), chemicals (benzene, smoking), X-ray treatment, or drugs (alkylating agents)
Epidemiology
AML accounts for 20% of childhood leukemia
Increased incidence with age (peak > 60)
